Stability and Peace: Managing Behaviors in the Daily Routine

Daily transitions can be difficult for children with autism. Learn how to use predictable routines to reduce stress and improve behavior.

The Stress of the Unpredictable

For many children on the spectrum, a simple change in the daily schedule can feel like a major crisis. This is because they often rely on predictability to feel safe. When the world feels unstable, challenging behaviors are often the only way a child knows how to express their distress.

The Power of Preventive Structure

By creating a structured daily flow and using visual aids, we can remove the "mystery" of what comes next. When a child understands their schedule, their anxiety levels drop. Preventive strategies, such as providing "transition warnings," can stop a challenging behavior before it even starts.

Creating Calm Routines

  • Create a visual schedule using pictures or simple icons for the day’s main tasks.
  • Keep the order of events as consistent as possible, especially during morning transitions.
  • Use a timer to provide a 5-minute and 1-minute warning before changing activities.
  • Remain calm and neutral during outbursts to guide the child back to the routine.

Behavioral Insight

Challenging behavior is often a response to environmental stress. In our center, we focus on modifying the environment first to ensure every child feels safe enough to be successful.
