Understanding Behavior: A Supportive Approach to Management

All behavior is communication. We explore how to understand the "why" behind challenging actions and how to teach more helpful responses.

Behavior as a Message

Challenging behaviors can be one of the most stressful aspects of parenting a child with autism. However, when we view behavior as a message—a way of communicating an unmet need—we can begin to solve the underlying problem with empathy rather than frustration.

The Function of Behavior

Behavior management isn’t about control; it’s about teaching. By conducting a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), we identify what a child is trying to achieve (such as escaping a task or gaining attention). We then teach "replacement behaviors" that are more effective and socially appropriate.

Actionable Strategies for Families

  • Keep a simple log of what happened before and after a challenging behavior.
  • Remain calm and neutral during an outburst to avoid reinforcing the behavior.
  • Focus on "proactive" strategies—changing the environment to prevent stress.
  • Always reward the positive behaviors you want to see more often.

Leadership Insight

The most effective behavior plans are those that are applied consistently across both school and home. We work closely with our families to ensure they feel confident in using these supportive strategies.
